TopRank’s 10 Must Read Tips to Start a Small Business Blog

by Peter Renton on February 23, 2010

Last week on the TopRank Online Marketing Blog there was an interesting post that has caused quite the buzz in the blogosphere. One of Lee Odden’s (the author of the TopRank blog) friends was starting a brand new business and contacted Odden who suggested he start a blog. He did start a blog but was going about it the wrong way, so Odden decided to create a Top 10 list of tips for starting a small business blog.

I have written before about choosing a blogging platform and this new blogger made the mistake of going with a Blogger account. Wordpress is the blogging platform of choice these days and unless you have a good reason to go with something else, all new business bloggers should use it. With Wordpress there is more support, more flexibility and more features than the other blogging platforms.

Odden’s list is an excellent starting point for all small business bloggers. I would have also stressed the importance of consistency and focus. Having a blog and posting to it once a month or less is almost pointless. There needs to be a dedication to the blogging process from day one. You don’t need to post every day but even if you are vacation (as I am right now) you should make sure there is new content on your blog every week. You can do this, by writing posts in advance and setting them to publish while you are away.

Every small business blogger would do well to read and adhere to points made in Odden’s list. It is by no means a definitive list but if you closely follow all ten points you will be well on your way to creating a successful small business blog.
